Description

Where the sheep line steps to a 1/2 in. valve

Four feet of narrow trough, 23 gallons, a 700 watt Model C element, and the first SC model to run a 1/2 in. Bob valve on an 8 in. float rod rather than the 3/8 in. and 6 in. combination below it. Rated 150 to 200 sheep, or 75 to 100 cattle.

The valve changes, so the parts list changes

Everything below the SC48 takes a 3/8 in. valve and a 6 in. float rod. From here up it is 1/2 in. and 8 in. Worth knowing before you pull a spare off the shelf.

What is inside the frame

Open the service door on a SC48-16 and you are looking at a stainless tank, an insulated galvanized frame and an element held clear of both. That clearance is the whole design, and it is why owners who have fought ice with a drop-in heater notice the difference.

The valve sits in an insulated compartment of its own beneath a removable cover, reached through a service door big enough for a hand and a forearm. On the SC48-16 that compartment holds a 1/2 in. Bob valve on an 8 in. float rod. The drain takes a 2 in. rubber stopper.

The body is 20 in. wide, narrow enough for a sheep pen that a cattle trough would crowd, and 48 in. of it gives the flock room to crowd the rim at once. 110 lb. empty.

Before you order

  • Water and power both arrive inside the base, so the trench carries two things and should be dug once. The SC48-16 footprint is 48 by 20 in., which is what your stub-ups have to land inside.
  • Pour a reinforced pad about 56 by 28 in. and set it a few inches proud of the surrounding ground. Manure that cannot pack against the frame is manure that cannot rot it.
  • The Model C element draws 5.8 amps at 120 volts, so a dedicated 15 amp circuit is enough. Have the ground checked while the electrician is there: poor grounding makes stray voltage, and stock that feels a tingle at a trough quietly stop drinking.
  • Empty weight is 110 lb. Plan on two strong backs or a bucket on the loader to place it.
  • Rated for 150 to 200 sheep, or 75 to 100 cattle. If the pen runs both species, buy on the sheep number and the cattle figure follows.
  • Take your water pressure reading at the waterer itself rather than at the well, and at more than one hour of the day.

SC48-16 Documents and Parts

Twenty-three Gallons on a 48 In. Trough. Rated for Sheep and for Cattle.

Rated for sheep, and for cattle too. Hoskins rates the SC48-16 at 150 to 200 sheep, or 75 to 100 cattle. 23 gallons on a 20 in. body, 110 lb. empty, and a 8 in. float rod setting the level. The narrow body is what makes it fit a sheep pen that a cattle trough would crowd.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sizing

How many sheep will one Hoskins waterer handle?

The SC32 is rated at 100 or more sheep, the SC48 at 150 to 200, the SC84 at 200 to 250 and the SC120 at 350 to 500. The SC22 is the small one, meant for a sick pen or a handful of lambs or calves rather than a flock.

Can I use a sheep waterer for cattle?

Yes. Hoskins rates every SC model for cattle as well, at roughly half the sheep figure. The SC48 carries 150 to 200 sheep or 75 to 100 cattle, and the SC120 carries 350 to 500 sheep or around 400 cattle. That makes the narrow line a sensible choice for a mixed operation.

How much water does a sheep drink?

Extension figures put sheep and goats at 2 to 3 gallons a day. Lactating ewes and hot weather both push that up, and a flock drinks as a group rather than drifting in, so rim space matters as much as capacity.

Choosing a model

Why is the sheep line narrower than the cattle line?

The SC body is 20 in. wide against 26 in. for the cattle tanks. A narrower trough gives pen space back, fits a lane or an alley, and suits a smaller animal reaching over the rim rather than down into a deep trough.

Which sheep models come in two heights?

Only the SC32, which is offered as the SC32-16 and the SC32-26. Every other model in the sheep line is built on the 16 in. frame.

Parts and service

What valve and float rod does my SC take?

The SC22 and both SC32 models use a 3/8 in. Bob valve on a 6 in. float rod. The SC48 steps up to a 1/2 in. valve on an 8 in. rod, and the SC84 and SC120 to a 3/4 in. valve on an 8 in. rod. All six take a 2 in. rubber stopper.
