Description
Description
Seven feet for a flock that drinks together
Eighty-four inches of trough and 42 gallons, on the 3/4 in. Bob valve. Sheep tend to come to water as a group rather than drifting in, so rim space is what a flock actually runs out of. Rated 200 to 250 sheep, or 150 to 200 cattle.
Rim space, not gallons
Seven feet of open trough lets a lot of noses down at once. That is what keeps a flock from bunching and shoving, and it is why a long narrow unit often outperforms a shorter deep one on the same head count.
What is inside the frame
Lift the cover on a SC84-16 and the order of things is plain: a stainless tank holding 42 gallons, an insulated 16 gauge galvanized shell wrapped around it, and an air gap between the two where the heating element lives.
The valve sits in an insulated compartment of its own beneath a removable cover, reached through a service door big enough for a hand and a forearm. On the SC84-16 that compartment holds a 3/4 in. Bob valve on an 8 in. float rod. The drain takes a 2 in. rubber stopper.
The body is 20 in. wide, narrow enough for a sheep pen that a cattle trough would crowd, and 84 in. of it gives the flock room to crowd the rim at once. 160 lb. empty.
Before you order
- Water and power both arrive inside the base, so the trench carries two things and should be dug once. The SC84-16 footprint is 84 by 20 in., which is what your stub-ups have to land inside.
- Pour a reinforced pad about 92 by 28 in. and set it a few inches proud of the surrounding ground. Manure that cannot pack against the frame is manure that cannot rot it.
- The Model C element draws 5.8 amps at 120 volts, so a dedicated 15 amp circuit is enough. Have the ground checked while the electrician is there: poor grounding makes stray voltage, and stock that feels a tingle at a trough quietly stop drinking.
- Empty weight is 160 lb. Plan on a loader rather than a carry.
- Rated for 200 to 250 sheep, or 150 to 200 cattle. If the pen runs both species, buy on the sheep number and the cattle figure follows.
- Take your water pressure reading at the waterer itself rather than at the well, and at more than one hour of the day.

Forty-two Gallons on a 84 In. Trough. Rated for Sheep and for Cattle.

The sheep line is where the Hoskins habit of building one honest thing in many sizes pays off best. A 20 in. body fits a pen that a cattle trough would crowd, every model carries a cattle rating as well as a sheep rating, and the stainless tank brushes out in a minute. Made in Hoskins, Nebraska since 1966, with the element held clear of the tank so the water stays open when the wind picks up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Sizing
How many sheep will one Hoskins waterer handle?
How many sheep will one Hoskins waterer handle?
The SC32 is rated at 100 or more sheep, the SC48 at 150 to 200, the SC84 at 200 to 250 and the SC120 at 350 to 500. The SC22 is the small one, meant for a sick pen or a handful of lambs or calves rather than a flock.
Can I use a sheep waterer for cattle?
Can I use a sheep waterer for cattle?
Yes. Hoskins rates every SC model for cattle as well, at roughly half the sheep figure. The SC48 carries 150 to 200 sheep or 75 to 100 cattle, and the SC120 carries 350 to 500 sheep or around 400 cattle. That makes the narrow line a sensible choice for a mixed operation.
How much water does a sheep drink?
How much water does a sheep drink?
Extension figures put sheep and goats at 2 to 3 gallons a day. Lactating ewes and hot weather both push that up, and a flock drinks as a group rather than drifting in, so rim space matters as much as capacity.
Choosing a model
Why is the sheep line narrower than the cattle line?
Why is the sheep line narrower than the cattle line?
The SC body is 20 in. wide against 26 in. for the cattle tanks. A narrower trough gives pen space back, fits a lane or an alley, and suits a smaller animal reaching over the rim rather than down into a deep trough.
Which sheep models come in two heights?
Which sheep models come in two heights?
Only the SC32, which is offered as the SC32-16 and the SC32-26. Every other model in the sheep line is built on the 16 in. frame.
Parts and service
What valve and float rod does my SC take?
What valve and float rod does my SC take?
The SC22 and both SC32 models use a 3/8 in. Bob valve on a 6 in. float rod. The SC48 steps up to a 1/2 in. valve on an 8 in. rod, and the SC84 and SC120 to a 3/4 in. valve on an 8 in. rod. All six take a 2 in. rubber stopper.
