Description
Description
The first horse model with a float rod
Eight gallons in a 28 x 17 in. tank, a 500 watt AA element, and a 3/8 in. Bob valve on a 4 in. float rod. That float rod is the dividing line in the horse line: below the HC17 it is the RM 153 assembly, from here up it is a Bob valve and a rod.
The 4 in. rod is unique to the HC17
Hoskins uses a 6 in. rod on the small sheep units and an 8 in. on the cattle tanks. The HC17 is the only model on a 4 in. rod, and rod length is what sets your water level, so it is not a part to substitute.
What is inside the frame
There is no mystery inside a HC17-16. The 8 gallon tank is stainless and rounded at the corners; the frame around it is insulated 16 gauge galvanized steel; and the Model AA element sits in that frame, not against the tank.
The valve sits in an insulated compartment of its own beneath a removable cover, reached through a service door big enough for a hand and a forearm. On the HC17-16 that compartment holds a 3/8 in. Bob valve on a 4 in. float rod. The drain takes a 1 1/2 in. rubber stopper.
At 28 by 17 in. the HC17-16 takes up very little of a stall or a fence line, and the 16 in. frame sets the drinking height. 75 lb. empty.
Before you order
- Water and power both arrive inside the base, so the trench carries two things and should be dug once. The HC17-16 footprint is 28 by 17 in., which is what your stub-ups have to land inside.
- Pour a reinforced pad about 36 by 25 in. and set it a few inches proud of the surrounding ground. Manure that cannot pack against the frame is manure that cannot rot it.
- The Model AA element draws 4.2 amps at 120 volts, so a dedicated 15 amp circuit is enough. Have the ground checked while the electrician is there: poor grounding makes stray voltage, and stock that feels a tingle at a trough quietly stop drinking.
- Empty weight is 75 lb. Two people can set it, which is part of why this size gets picked for pens that move.
- The HC17-16 is rated for horses and cattle in smaller operations. Check the drinking height against your animals: the 16 in. frame is the thing that sets it, and the same tank is offered on the other frame.
- Take your water pressure reading at the waterer itself rather than at the well, and at more than one hour of the day.

HC17-16 Parts List
Eight Gallons, 28 by 17 In. Sized for a Fence Line.
A float rod length found nowhere else in the line. The HC17-16 runs a 4 in. float rod. The sheep units use six inches and the cattle units eight. The rod is what sets the water level, so a substitute of the wrong length changes how full the tank sits.

A horse tank gets looked at every day, so it may as well be one you can see into. The Hoskins horse units are stainless inside an insulated galvanized frame, with rounded corners, no ball to push aside and the heating element held off the tank so warmth arrives through the air. Built in Hoskins, Nebraska since 1966 — small units, but the same construction as the hundred-twenty inch cattle troughs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Sizing
How much water does a horse drink in a day?
How much water does a horse drink in a day?
Ten to fifteen gallons is the usual figure for a mature horse at rest. Work, heat and dry feed all push it higher. A Hoskins horse unit holds between 3 and 8 gallons and refills continuously, so the tank size is about turnover rather than about holding a day of water.
Why is the tank so small?
Why is the tank so small?
Deliberately. A 3 gallon tank with a horse on it turns over several times a day, so what the horse drinks has been in the trough for hours rather than days. A big tank on a small group goes stale and grows a film, and no amount of capacity fixes that.
Should I take the 16 in. or the 26 in. frame?
Should I take the 16 in. or the 26 in. frame?
The tank is identical either way. Take the 26 in. frame where shavings or bedding build up, or where you want the rim at a comfortable reach for a horse standing square. Take the 16 in. where the unit sits on a pad in open ground.
Choosing a model
Can I put one in a fence between two paddocks?
Can I put one in a fence between two paddocks?
Yes, and the HC14 is the model Hoskins points at that job. One unit and one water line serve a paddock on each side. Set the waterer first and build the fence to it, leaving the frame square on its pad with the posts clear so it can be pulled for service.
Can I water cattle from a horse unit?
Can I water cattle from a horse unit?
Hoskins describes the HC14 and HC17 as horse and cattle waterers, and the HC17 is aimed at smaller operations running both. For a group that is mostly cattle and growing, the C28 is the better starting point.
Parts and service
Which horse models have a float rod?
Which horse models have a float rod?
Only the HC17, which uses a 3/8 in. Bob valve on a 4 in. float rod. The HC7 and HC14 use the 3/8 in. RM 153 valve and float assembly instead, with no rod. The 4 in. rod is unique to the HC17 in the whole Hoskins line, and rod length sets your water level, so it is not a part to substitute.
