Frequently Asked Questions
Which Smidley hog bar do I need?
Which Smidley hog bar do I need?
Start with head count and which side of the fence the pigs are on. Smidley allows a maximum of 25 head per drink space, so one drink covers up to 25 head, two drinks up to 50, four up to 100 and six up to 150. The 9150141 and the 9150152 are single sided, so they sit against a wall or a solid divider. The 9150142, 9150154 and 9150166 have a trough on each side, so one unit waters a pen on both sides of a fence line.
Do Smidley hog bars come heated?
Do Smidley hog bars come heated?
Yes. Every one comes standard with electric heat and a self regulating thermostat, so the element only draws when the water actually needs it rather than running all winter. Thick styrofoam insulation rated at a 2.7 R factor runs through the body, so a small element is enough to keep the water open.
What are they built out of?
What are they built out of?
100 percent 304 stainless steel, a heavy 14 gauge body with heavier 12 gauge drink lids. That matters most at the water line, which is where a painted or galvanized bar starts to go first. There is no coating to chip and nothing underneath it to rust.
Why does a Smidley not go black?
Why does a Smidley not go black?
The drink lids. Feed and bedding stay out of the trough because the lid only opens when a pig pushes it, so the water underneath stays clear. That is the reason Smidley has built them this way for as long as they have.
How do they ship?
How do they ship?
The smaller bars go Speedee inside Speedee territory, with UPS as the backup everywhere else. The four and six drink units ship freight, and they can also be picked up in Britt, Iowa if you would rather collect one yourself. Add the unit to the cart and enter your address at checkout to see the exact cost.
