Description
Description
A pressure-reducing valve package for Ritchie waterers running at higher pressure than the valve was built for. It goes into the supply line ahead of the unit, so the water reaching the valve arrives at a steady pressure instead of whatever the system is doing that hour. The line can be spliced, and the package includes fittings for 3/8 in. hose.
When the valve will not stop dripping no matter how many you fit
Ritchie color codes its valves by pressure band, and the green valve is the top of the range. On 1/2 in. valve series units, that is part 13597, rated 60 to 80 PSI. Run above that pressure, and the valve has more pressure behind it than it was built to shut off against. Ritchie's own first indicator of high pressure is that the valve "constantly drips", and it says the valve rubber will be distorted and no longer flat. A replacement valve fitted into the same pressure fails the same way, which is why the third or fourth one drips too.
What high pressure looks like at the unit
- A valve that drips or will not shut off completely, straight after a fresh valve went in
- Valve rubber that is distorted rather than flat when you take it out
- A float that does not seem to have the buoyancy to turn the valve off
- Sputtering or hammering when the valve closes
Worth being straight about this: pressure is one cause of a dripping valve and not the only one. Ritchie names debris and mineral buildup on the rubber as the most common problem on well water. If your water is hard, check the rubber for scale before you assume pressure.
Check the pressure at the unit, not at the source
Ritchie is specific about this: test with a gauge at the waterer rather than back at the well head or the hydrant. Pressure read at the source can look fine while the figure at the unit is well above the valve's band. City water counts as high by Ritchie's own reckoning, and it moves around through the day with everyone else's usage.
