Description
Description
The lighter 22 in. single
Same 17 x 22 x 9 in. body and the same 5 gallons as the standard H9-22S, listed at 55 lb. against 60. One compartment, Model A element, 3/8 in. RM 153 valve, 1 1/2 in. stopper.
SS means a stainless steel frame
Hoskins lists these as "Hog SS Frame". The standard build carries the insulated galvanized frame; the SS build swaps that frame for stainless steel. The tank is stainless either way. Stainless costs more and weighs a little less, and it is the one to take where the frame spends its life wet, or where a hog pen gets washed down hard.
What is inside the frame
There is no mystery inside a H9-22S SS. The 5 gallon tank is stainless and rounded at the corners; the frame around it is insulated 16 gauge galvanized steel; and the Model A element sits in that frame, not against the tank.
The valve sits in an insulated compartment of its own beneath a removable cover, reached through a service door big enough for a hand and a forearm. On the H9-22S SS that compartment holds a 3/8 in. RM 153 valve and float assembly, with no separate rod to match. The drain takes a 1 1/2 in. rubber stopper.
The trough itself is 9 in. tall and 22 in. across with a single drinking compartment, low enough that weaned pigs reach it without help. This version carries a stainless steel frame rather than galvanized, which is why it comes in lighter at 55 lb. and takes repeated washing better.
Before you order
- Water and power both arrive inside the base, so the trench carries two things and should be dug once. The H9-22S SS footprint is 17 by 22 in., which is what your stub-ups have to land inside.
- Pour a reinforced pad about 25 by 30 in. and set it a few inches proud of the surrounding ground. Manure that cannot pack against the frame is manure that cannot rot it.
- The Model A element draws 2.1 amps at 120 volts, so a dedicated 15 amp circuit is enough. Have the ground checked while the electrician is there: poor grounding makes stray voltage, and stock that feels a tingle at a trough quietly stop drinking.
- Empty weight is 55 lb. Two people can set it, which is part of why this size gets picked for pens that move.
- Hoskins rates the H9-22S SS at up to 100 hogs. Measure the pen opening before ordering, because the H9 line is sized by width and the 22 in. body is what has to fit.
- Take your water pressure reading at the waterer itself rather than at the well, and at more than one hour of the day.

H9-22S SS Parts List
Five Gallons, 22 In. Wide, One Compartment, Stainless Frame.
The stainless frame version. The H9-22S SS is the same trough on a stainless steel frame instead of galvanized, which is 55 lb. empty rather than heavier, and holds up better where washing is frequent and the air stays humid.

Nine inches tall, stainless, and low enough that a weaned pig can drink without help. The H9 troughs come in widths to suit the pen rather than the other way round, the element sits in the frame with air around it instead of against the tank, and the galvanized or stainless frame takes washing. Hoskins has built them in Hoskins, Nebraska since 1966, and they are easy to keep going because there is very little to go wrong.
Frequently Asked Questions
Reading the model numbers
What do the numbers in an H9 model mean?
What do the numbers in an H9 model mean?
H9 is the height: every model in the series is 9 in. tall. The number after it is the width, 14, 22 or 34 in. The letter is the compartments, S for one and D for two. So an H9-22D is 22 in. wide with two compartments.
What is a CH model?
What is a CH model?
A combination cattle and hog waterer. One stainless tank feeds a cattle drinker on one side and a hog drinker on the other, which is why the CH models appear on both our cattle and our pig pages. They carry two valves and both stopper sizes.
What does the SS suffix mean?
What does the SS suffix mean?
Hoskins lists several H9 models with an SS suffix at 5 to 10 lb. lighter than the standard version, but does not publish what the suffix changes. We have put the question to the factory and will post the answer here rather than guess at it. Both versions share the same dimensions and the same parts.
Sizing
How many hogs will one waterer handle?
How many hogs will one waterer handle?
The 14 in. and 22 in. singles and the 14 in. double are rated up to 100 head. The H9-22D and both 34 in. singles carry up to 150, and the H9-34D carries 100 to 250. The CH combination units are rated at 100 hogs per drinker alongside their cattle figure.
How much water does a hog drink?
How much water does a hog drink?
Roughly 4 gallons a day for a mature hog and 1 to 2 for a feeder pig, with lactating sows well above that. The H9 tanks hold 5 to 13 gallons and refill continuously, so capacity matters less than making sure every pig in the pen can reach the trough.
Installation
Can one unit serve two pens?
Can one unit serve two pens?
Yes. Set a D model into a pen divider and both sides drink off one water line and one element: one trench, one circuit, one valve compartment to service. The CH series does the same thing across two species rather than two pens.
