Two compartments across twenty-two inches
Twenty-eight inches long, 22 in. wide, 8 gallons, two compartments, up to 150 head. The extra length over the H9-22S is what buys the second compartment and the three extra gallons, at 20 lb. more weight.
Two compartments, two groups
A double set into a pen divider waters both sides off one line and one element. That is one trench, one circuit and one valve compartment to service instead of two.
What is inside the frame
The H9-22D is built the way every Hoskins is built, at this particular size. Stainless tank, 8 gallons. Insulated galvanized frame. Element mounted in the frame with air all around it rather than clamped to the steel.
The valve sits in an insulated compartment of its own beneath a removable cover, reached through a service door big enough for a hand and a forearm. On the H9-22D that compartment holds a 3/8 in. RM 153 valve and float assembly, with no separate rod to match. The drain takes a 1 1/2 in. rubber stopper.
The trough itself is 9 in. tall and 22 in. across with two drinking compartments, low enough that weaned pigs reach it without help. The frame is galvanized, 80 lb. empty.
Before you order
- Water and power both arrive inside the base, so the trench carries two things and should be dug once. The H9-22D footprint is 28 by 22 in., which is what your stub-ups have to land inside.
- Pour a reinforced pad about 36 by 30 in. and set it a few inches proud of the surrounding ground. Manure that cannot pack against the frame is manure that cannot rot it.
- The Model A element draws 2.1 amps at 120 volts, so a dedicated 15 amp circuit is enough. Have the ground checked while the electrician is there: poor grounding makes stray voltage, and stock that feels a tingle at a trough quietly stop drinking.
- Empty weight is 80 lb. Plan on two strong backs or a bucket on the loader to place it.
- Hoskins rates the H9-22D at up to 150 hogs. Measure the pen opening before ordering, because the H9 line is sized by width and the 22 in. body is what has to fit.
- Take your water pressure reading at the waterer itself rather than at the well, and at more than one hour of the day.

What do the numbers in an H9 model mean?
H9 is the height: every model in the series is 9 in. tall. The number after it is the width, 14, 22 or 34 in. The letter is the compartments, S for one and D for two. So an H9-22D is 22 in. wide with two compartments.

A combination cattle and hog waterer. One stainless tank feeds a cattle drinker on one side and a hog drinker on the other, which is why the CH models appear on both our cattle and our pig pages. They carry two valves and both stopper sizes.
What does the SS suffix mean?

Hoskins lists several H9 models with an SS suffix at 5 to 10 lb. lighter than the standard version, but does not publish what the suffix changes. We have put the question to the factory and will post the answer here rather than guess at it. Both versions share the same dimensions and the same parts.

The 14 in. and 22 in. singles and the 14 in. double are rated up to 100 head. The H9-22D and both 34 in. singles carry up to 150, and the H9-34D carries 100 to 250. The CH combination units are rated at 100 hogs per drinker alongside their cattle figure.

Roughly 4 gallons a day for a mature hog and 1 to 2 for a feeder pig, with lactating sows well above that. The H9 tanks hold 5 to 13 gallons and refill continuously, so capacity matters less than making sure every pig in the pen can reach the trough.
