Description
Description
Four feet of trough on the tall frame
The 48 in. tank at 26 in. of height, 37 gallons, a 700 watt element and the 1/2 in. Bob valve. At 145 lb. it is the heaviest of the 1/2 in. valve units, and for a lot running 100 to 200 head it is the size most operations land on.
Still a 1/2 in. valve
The C48 is the largest cattle tank Hoskins builds on the 1/2 in. valve. Above this, at 75 in., the line moves to 3/4 in. If you are stocking a spare valve, the C28, C36 and C48 all take the same one.
What is inside the frame
Lift the cover on a C48-26 and the order of things is plain: a stainless tank holding 37 gallons, an insulated 16 gauge galvanized shell wrapped around it, and an air gap between the two where the heating element lives.
The valve sits in an insulated compartment of its own beneath a removable cover, reached through a service door big enough for a hand and a forearm. On the C48-26 that compartment holds a 1/2 in. Bob valve on an 8 in. float rod. The drain takes a 2 in. rubber stopper.
The 26 in. frame holds the water further off the ground, which keeps dirt out and gives a cleaner drink, and 48 in. of open trough lets a good many head at the water at once. 145 lb. empty.
Before you order
- Water and power both arrive inside the base, so the trench carries two things and should be dug once. The C48-26 footprint is 48 by 26 in., which is what your stub-ups have to land inside.
- Pour a reinforced pad about 56 by 34 in. and set it a few inches proud of the surrounding ground. Manure that cannot pack against the frame is manure that cannot rot it.
- The Model C element draws 5.8 amps at 120 volts, so a dedicated 15 amp circuit is enough. Have the ground checked while the electrician is there: poor grounding makes stray voltage, and stock that feels a tingle at a trough quietly stop drinking.
- Empty weight is 145 lb. Plan on a loader rather than a carry.
- Rated for 100 to 200 cattle. Rim space matters as much as gallons, because cattle drink in groups: 48 in. of open trough is what decides how many get at it at once.
- Take your water pressure reading at the waterer itself rather than at the well, and at more than one hour of the day.

C48-26 Parts List
Thirty-seven Gallons, 48 Inches of Rim, a Tall 26 In. Frame.
The tall frame, for deeper water and less splash. The C48-26 is the 26 in. version of the 48 in. tank. A taller frame holds the water further off the ground, which keeps dirt out and gives a cleaner drink. Same 37 gallon stainless tank either way.

View allWhy producers stay with Hoskins
Hoskins has been welding these in Hoskins, Nebraska since 1966, and the recipe has not needed changing: a stainless tank you can see into and brush out, an insulated 16 gauge galvanized frame around it, and the heating element held clear of the steel so warmth comes up through the air instead of from one hot patch on the tank wall. Open troughs give up a little more heat than a sealed plastic unit, and we will not pretend otherwise — what you get back is rim space, reach, and a tank that is still sound in twenty years.
Frequently Asked Questions
Sizing
How many head will a Hoskins cattle waterer handle?
How many head will a Hoskins cattle waterer handle?
Hoskins rates every model by head rather than by gallons. The C28 carries 75 to 100, the C36 75 to 125, the C48 100 to 200, the C75 150 to 250, the C95 250 to 350 and the C120 up to 500. Size on peak demand rather than daily average, because cattle come to water as a bunch after feeding.
What is the difference between a 16 in. and a 26 in. model?
What is the difference between a 16 in. and a 26 in. model?
Only the frame height. A C36-16 and a C36-26 are the same 36 x 26 in. stainless tank, the same 31 gallons and the same head rating. The 26 in. frame lifts the trough out of mud, snow and bedding pack, and adds about 25 lb. to the shipping weight.
How much water does a cow drink in a day?
How much water does a cow drink in a day?
Extension figures put dry and bred cows at 6 to 15 gallons a day, nursing cows at 11 to 18, growing cattle at 4 to 15 and dairy cattle at 15 to 30. Hot weather pushes every one of those toward the top of its range.
Installation
What electrical supply does a Hoskins waterer need?
What electrical supply does a Hoskins waterer need?
Give each unit its own breaker and have the ground checked properly. The C120 at 2,100 watts draws roughly 17.5 amps at 120 volts, which is more than a general purpose circuit should carry, so settle the supply with your electrician before the trench goes in. Poor grounding is the usual source of stray voltage, and stock that gets a tingle off a waterer will quietly stop drinking from it.
Does it need a concrete pad?
Does it need a concrete pad?
A reinforced pad set a few inches proud of the surrounding ground is what makes one of these last. It keeps manure and mud out of the frame, gives the cattle clean footing, and stops the unit settling out of level. Grade so that water runs away from the pad rather than toward it.
Parts and service
What size valve is on my unit?
What size valve is on my unit?
The C28, C36 and C48 run the 1/2 in. Bob valve. The C75, C95 and C120 run the 3/4 in. All cattle models use an 8 in. float rod and a 2 in. rubber stopper. Read the model number off the plate on the service door before ordering.
Will a Hoskins waterer freeze?
Will a Hoskins waterer freeze?
The heated models combine ground heat with an electric element mounted clear of the tank, so heat reaches the water through the air space rather than through a hot spot on the steel. Keeping one open still depends on the power staying on, the element and thermostat working and the riser being protected, so check all three in autumn rather than in January.
