Description

The fence line model

Hoskins points the 36 in. tanks at fence line work, and this is the low-frame version. Set in a fence between two pens, one unit and one water line serve both sides, which halves the plumbing and the wiring for a two-pen setup. Thirty-one gallons and a 500 watt element carry 75 to 125 head.

Build the fence to the waterer

Set the unit first and bring the fence to it, rather than cutting a waterer into a finished fence. You want the frame square on its pad with the posts clear of it, so it can be pulled and serviced without taking the fence down.

What is inside the frame

The C36-16 is built the way every Hoskins is built, at this particular size. Stainless tank, 31 gallons. Insulated galvanized frame. Element mounted in the frame with air all around it rather than clamped to the steel.

The valve sits in an insulated compartment of its own beneath a removable cover, reached through a service door big enough for a hand and a forearm. On the C36-16 that compartment holds a 1/2 in. Bob valve on an 8 in. float rod. The drain takes a 2 in. rubber stopper.

The 16 in. frame keeps the rim low, which suits calves and smaller cattle, and 36 in. of open trough lets a good many head at the water at once. 100 lb. empty.

Before you order

  • Water and power both arrive inside the base, so the trench carries two things and should be dug once. The C36-16 footprint is 36 by 26 in., which is what your stub-ups have to land inside.
  • Pour a reinforced pad about 44 by 34 in. and set it a few inches proud of the surrounding ground. Manure that cannot pack against the frame is manure that cannot rot it.
  • The Model B element draws 4.2 amps at 120 volts, so a dedicated 15 amp circuit is enough. Have the ground checked while the electrician is there: poor grounding makes stray voltage, and stock that feels a tingle at a trough quietly stop drinking.
  • Empty weight is 100 lb. Plan on two strong backs or a bucket on the loader to place it.
  • Rated for 75 to 125 cattle. Rim space matters as much as gallons, because cattle drink in groups: 36 in. of open trough is what decides how many get at it at once.
  • Take your water pressure reading at the waterer itself rather than at the well, and at more than one hour of the day.

C36-16 Documents and Parts

Thirty-one Gallons, 36 Inches of Rim, a Low 16 In. Frame.

The low frame, for stock that will not step up. The C36-16 is the 16 in. version of the 36 in. tank. A lower rim suits calves, smaller cattle and anywhere a short step up matters. Same 31 gallon stainless tank either way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sizing

How many head will a Hoskins cattle waterer handle?

Hoskins rates every model by head rather than by gallons. The C28 carries 75 to 100, the C36 75 to 125, the C48 100 to 200, the C75 150 to 250, the C95 250 to 350 and the C120 up to 500. Size on peak demand rather than daily average, because cattle come to water as a bunch after feeding.

What is the difference between a 16 in. and a 26 in. model?

Only the frame height. A C36-16 and a C36-26 are the same 36 x 26 in. stainless tank, the same 31 gallons and the same head rating. The 26 in. frame lifts the trough out of mud, snow and bedding pack, and adds about 25 lb. to the shipping weight.

How much water does a cow drink in a day?

Extension figures put dry and bred cows at 6 to 15 gallons a day, nursing cows at 11 to 18, growing cattle at 4 to 15 and dairy cattle at 15 to 30. Hot weather pushes every one of those toward the top of its range.

Installation

What electrical supply does a Hoskins waterer need?

Give each unit its own breaker and have the ground checked properly. The C120 at 2,100 watts draws roughly 17.5 amps at 120 volts, which is more than a general purpose circuit should carry, so settle the supply with your electrician before the trench goes in. Poor grounding is the usual source of stray voltage, and stock that gets a tingle off a waterer will quietly stop drinking from it.

Does it need a concrete pad?

A reinforced pad set a few inches proud of the surrounding ground is what makes one of these last. It keeps manure and mud out of the frame, gives the cattle clean footing, and stops the unit settling out of level. Grade so that water runs away from the pad rather than toward it.

Parts and service

What size valve is on my unit?

The C28, C36 and C48 run the 1/2 in. Bob valve. The C75, C95 and C120 run the 3/4 in. All cattle models use an 8 in. float rod and a 2 in. rubber stopper. Read the model number off the plate on the service door before ordering.

Will a Hoskins waterer freeze?

The heated models combine ground heat with an electric element mounted clear of the tank, so heat reaches the water through the air space rather than through a hot spot on the steel. Keeping one open still depends on the power staying on, the element and thermostat working and the riser being protected, so check all three in autumn rather than in January.
