Frequently Asked Questions

Can Thrifty King waterers really operate without electricity?

Yes—in many cases. The Thrifty King Series is designed as an energy-free or low-energy system, using heavy insulation and a sealed design to retain ground heat. In moderate climates, they can often operate without supplemental heat, though extreme conditions may require an immersion heater or heat cable.

What are the requirements to keep the Thrifty King Energy Free?

  • There must be at least 10 animals that have the Thrifty King fountain as their only source of water.
  • There must be a good seal against wind between the concrete platform and base of the unit.
  • The water seal grooves between the base, and top of the unit, and between the top of the unit and the valve cover must be filled with liquid.
  • The supply water temperature must be at least 42o F. (This may be an issue for rural or municipal water supplies.)

Installation is KEY! Follow the manufacturers recommendation. Thermal Tubes are recocommended. If possible, consider running electricity in the event your watering situation changes heat protection is needed. Stop and waste valve recommended with evry new installation.

How do Thrifty King waterers prevent freezing?

They use a combination of:

  • Fully insulated polyethylene construction surrounding the water
  • Insulated elliptical closures that cover the drinking openings
  • A water seal system that blocks cold air infiltration

These features work together to retain heat and minimize ice formation.

What are the elliptical closures, and are they easy for cattle to use?

The elliptical closures are insulated lids that float over the water openings. They are designed to tip easily with minimal pressure, allowing cattle to drink while keeping heat in and debris out.

How many cattle can Thrifty King waterers support?

Capacity depends on the model:

  • CT1: ~30 head
  • CT2: up to ~100 head
  • CT4: up to ~200 head

This range allows producers to match the unit to their herd size and layout.

Are Thrifty King waterers good for both summer and winter use?

Yes. In winter, the insulation helps prevent freezing, while in summer the covered design keeps water cooler and reduces evaporation. The closures also help limit contamination and mosquito breeding, improving overall water quality.

How difficult are Thrifty King waterers to install?

Installation is straightforward but important for performance. Units are typically mounted on a concrete pad with a vertical riser pipe, and proper sealing at the base is critical to prevent cold air intrusion.

What kind of maintenance do these units require?

Maintenance is relatively simple:

  • Periodic cleaning with a brush
  • Checking float and valve operation
  • Ensuring closures are positioned correctly to prevent freezing

Most components are easily accessible for servicing.
