Trojan Waterers and Parts

Trojan Specialty Products builds gravity and pressure watering equipment for swine, cattle and horses, along with the heaters that keep water open once the temperature drops. We stock the line deep, not just the units.

That means the 66B LP gas stock tank heater and the burner assemblies, pilot tubes, thermocouples and orifices behind it, the AG82 universal heater, the Hot Scot and the Pipe-N-Hot, Big Blue nipple founts, the 3 and 4 gallon pen waterers the show barn runs on, cup and bowl waterers in cast aluminum and cast iron, waterswings, gravity and pressure nipples in every bite size Trojan makes, gravity flow connector kits, and the small parts that actually wear out. Valves, floats, orifices, springs, O-rings and triggers.

If you are not sure whether your system is gravity or pressure, the section below walks through how to tell, and the one after it lines the nipples up by bite size and pig stage. Still stuck, send us a photo of your setup through our contact form and we will match it for you.

Water Every Head, Every Season

Trojan Specialty Products builds gravity and pressure watering for swine, cattle and horses, plus the heaters that keep it all running when the temperature drops.

The Trojan Line at a Glance

  • The 66B Stock Tank Heater

LP gas heat for stock tanks, no electricity needed. We stock the burner assemblies, pilot tubes, thermocouples and orifices to keep one going.

  • Pen Waterers

Portable 3 and 4 gallon pen waterers with handles, sold single or in packs. A show barn staple.

  • Connector Kits

Turn a barrel or tank into a waterer. Each kit pairs the right nipple with the adapter and hardware.

  • The Hot Scot Heater

A compact heater for well houses and waterers, built to hold off a freeze in a small space.

Gravity or Pressure, How to Tell Which You Need

This is the question we get more than any other on the Trojan line, and the difference between the two nipples is smaller than most people expect.

The Only Difference Is the Orifice

Trojan builds gravity and pressure nipples on the same body. The trigger, the spring and the O-ring inside are identical.

What changes is the orifice, the small piece screwed into the back of the nipple. A pressure orifice has smaller holes that slow the water down. A gravity orifice is open, so water runs freely the moment the trigger moves.

Because that is the only difference, the orifices are interchangeable. If your system changes, you can convert the nipple rather than buy a new one.

Which One Your System Needs

20 to 40 psi, use a pressure nipple. The smaller orifice holds the water back to a pressure an animal can drink comfortably instead of being sprayed.

10 psi or less, or a barrel or standalone tank, use gravity flow. The open orifice lets what little pressure you have actually reach the animal.

Putting a pressure nipple on a gravity system is the common mistake. It slows the water so far that the animal cannot get a decent drink, and that shows up as frustration and under watering before it shows up as anything else.

Every Trojan nipple is cut with standard 1/2 inch threads, so fitting is never the deciding factor.

Cup waterers follow the same rule. A Model 33 cup ships with the 393 pressure valve, which will not pass enough water on a gravity line. To run that cup on gravity, swap in the 290 gravity valve, which has the open orifice. Not sure which you have? Send us a photo through our contact form and we will tell you.

Which Nipple for Which Pig

Bite size is what decides this. A nipple that is too big is hard for a young pig to work, and one that is too small gets chewed on and wastes water. Here is how the Trojan models line up.

ModelBite sizeBest for
Spiglet and Spiglet 075/8 in and 3/8 inPiglets and young pigs in farrowing stalls, creeps and nurseries. Easier for a small mouth to activate.
Model 75 and Cone Throat 75About 3/4 inGrowers, finishers and adult pigs. The cone throat version directs the water and cuts the waste.
Oval Duct 85About 3/4 inLarger pigs and mixed groups. The oval shape pulls the nipple straight into the mouth, so less sprays out the sides.
Oval Duct 95About 1 1/8 inThe biggest pigs and anything with a strong bite. Stainless construction and the least water on the floor.

How Many Pigs per Nipple

Flow rate and water pressure matter as much as the count, so treat these as the ceiling rather than the target.

StagePigs per nipple
Nursery pigs10 to 12
Grower pigsAbout 10
Finisher pigs8 to 10
Sows in stalls1 per sow
Group housed sows8 to 10

Stay on the low end of these ranges. Crowding a nipple costs you more in gain than the second nipple costs to install, and it is the first thing to look at when a pen is not drinking the way it should.

Gravity or Pressure? They Do Not Interchange

Check the letter on the end of the part number before you order.

A gravity nipple carries a G, like the 16626G or the 10095G. The pressure version of the same nipple drops the G. They look nearly identical in a photo and they will not work in each other's place. Gravity runs off a barrel or tank with no pressure behind it, pressure runs off a plumbed line. If you are not sure which you have, send us a note through our contact form and we will sort it out.

Shop Trojan by Animal

  • Swine

Hogs are what Trojan builds for first. Pressure and gravity nipples from baby pig through finisher, cast aluminum cup waterers, pen waterers for the show barn and barrel kits for the pasture, all in one place.

  • Cattle and Dairy

The 16990 rubber nipple is made for calves, with a softer bite than the hog nipples and the same pressure fitting, so it goes on the line you already have.

  • Cattle, Horses and Other Livestock

Winter is where Trojan crosses over. The 66B LP gas stock tank heater and the Hot Scot keep water open for cattle, horses and anything else drinking outdoors in the cold.

Keeping a 66B Running

Most 66B calls come down to the pilot.

A heater that will not stay lit is usually a thermocouple or a plugged pilot orifice, not the whole burner. We stock the pilot tubes in both the 23 inch old style and the 28 inch new style, the thermocouples, the orifices in LP and natural gas, and the brackets and bands. Tell us what your heater is doing and we will get you the part that fixes it.

Trojan Questions We Get Asked

What is the difference between a gravity nipple and a pressure nipple?

Only the orifice, the small piece screwed into the back of the nipple. The trigger, spring and O-ring are the same in both. A pressure orifice has smaller holes that slow the water down, and a gravity orifice is open so the water runs freely. The orifices are interchangeable, so you can convert a nipple instead of replacing it.

Which one does my system need?

Run a pressure nipple on a system between 20 and 40 psi. Run a gravity flow nipple when you are at 10 psi or less, or when you are feeding off a barrel or a standalone tank. A pressure nipple on a gravity line slows the water so far the animal cannot get a decent drink.

How many pigs can one nipple water?

Figure 10 to 12 nursery pigs, about 10 growers, 8 to 10 finishers, one per sow in stalls, and 8 to 10 for group housed sows. Stay on the low end of those ranges. Flow rate and water pressure matter as much as the head count.

Which nipple should I use for the size of pig I have?

Bite size decides it. The Spiglet and Spiglet 07 are 5/8 inch and 3/8 inch, made for piglets and young pigs. The Model 75 and Cone Throat 75 run about 3/4 inch and suit growers, finishers and adults. The Oval Duct 85 is about 3/4 inch and the Oval Duct 95 is about 1 1/8 inch, both shaped so the pig takes the nipple straight in, which keeps the spray off the pen floor.

Are all Trojan nipples the same thread?

Yes, every Trojan water nipple is made with standard 1/2 inch threads, so the thread is never what decides which one you order.

Why is my nipple leaking?

Usually one of four things. It froze, in which case it needs replacing. It was put in with a pipe wrench and went egg shaped, which also means replacing it. Something is lodged inside, which means cleaning it out. Or your incoming pressure is too high, in which case bring it down to 30 to 40 psi.

To clean one, back the orifice out counterclockwise with a large flathead or a quarter, and go carefully because the spring is under tension. The trigger and spring come out with it. Pull the O-ring, clean everything, then drop the O-ring back down against the internal shelf, put the trigger in, then the spring, then screw the orifice back on snug without overtightening.

How do I adjust the flow on a pressure nipple?

Pop the screen off the back of the orifice by pushing it sideways. Inside you will see a screwdriver slot. Turn it to line up with the hole size you want. They leave the factory on maximum, which is one large hole, or one large and one small depending on the model. Medium is one medium hole or two small ones, and minimum is a single small hole. Snap the screen back on when you are done.

Will my Model 33 cup work on gravity flow?

Not as it comes. The Model 33 ships with the 393 pressure valve, which is built with small orifices for 20 to 40 psi and will not pass enough water on a gravity line. Swap in the 290 gravity valve, which has the open orifice, and it will work.

What is the difference between the blue cups and the black cups?

Material. The blue Model 33 and Model 13 cups are cast aluminum, and the black ones are cast iron. The Model 93 and Model 63 come in cast iron only. All of them share the same bolt hole pattern, so you can change from one to another without redrilling.

How high should a waterswing hang?

About 2 inches above the pig’s back, and you set that with the S hook on the chain in the mounting package. Hung right, the plastic swings work for any size of pig as long as the nipple in them suits the animal. Figure 8 to 12 pigs per nipple on a swing.

Will the 66B stock tank heater work in a plastic tank?

Yes. There is a lip welded to the bottom of the casing that holds the unit up off the floor of the tank. Use a 100 gallon tank or larger though. A 2 inch deep sheep tank is too shallow for it.

What size propane tank should I run on the 66B?

A 100 pound cylinder or larger. A grill bottle is too small, it needs filling constantly and it is far more likely to freeze up on you in hard cold. A bigger tank runs steadier.

Can I convert the 66B to natural gas?

No. The 66B is CSA certified for propane only, and modifying it voids that certification. We would not recommend it on safety grounds either.

Do I need the regulator that came with my 66B?

Yes, and this one matters. The non adjusting pressure regulator in the hookup kit has to be on the gas line. Leaving it off voids the warranty and can damage the Robert Shaw control valve, which is not a cheap part to replace.
