Description
Description
If your Ritchie Hydrant is leaking, typically the main cause is a worn plunger assembly. The Ritchie hydrants are discontinued and plungers are available as supplies last.
The plunger assembly is located below ground. Remove the hydrant head to remove from the ground without digging.
The plunger assembly includes:
1 - Brass or Steel Washer
1 - Neoprene plunger sleeve
1 - Leather seat washer
1 - screw brass plunger
What this part is. The 15170 is the complete plunger assembly for the Ritchie Frost Free Hydrant. It is the part that seats to shut the water off, and Ritchie’s own hydrant troubleshooting guide points at it first when a hydrant keeps dripping after the handle is closed.
What Ritchie’s troubleshooting guide says. Ritchie gives two causes for a hydrant that drips once the handle is shut: the plunger rod needs adjusting, or the leather washer on the plunger assembly is worn or damaged. If the hydrant is instead leaking around the rod up in the head, Ritchie points at the brass packing nut or the packing rather than the plunger.
If it still leaks after a new plunger assembly
Ritchie is specific about this: when the leak continues after the plunger assembly has been replaced, the valve chamber itself needs replacing, and that means pulling the hydrant out of the ground. Worth knowing before you order the plunger a second time.
Other things Ritchie attributes to the hydrant rather than the plunger. A hydrant that freezes points to a plugged drain weep hole in the valve chamber, a leaking valve, or a groundwater level that is too high. A plunger rod that will not come out easily points to calcium or iron buildup in the valve chamber. And if you are back-flushing a frozen hydrant, Ritchie cautions against using a pressure source over 125 PSI.
