Hoskins 1/2 in. Bob valve
Solid brass, with BOB cast into the body so there is no mistaking it once the cover is off. This is the valve that fills the tank: the float rod bolts to the lever arm, the float rides on the water, and the valve shuts as the level comes up.
Valve only
The float rod and float are separate items. These models run a 8 in. rod — we stock it alongside this valve. Size is set by your model and is not a matter of preference: too small and the tank will not keep up, too large and it will not shut off cleanly.

The 1/2 in. is the middle size and the one most cattle owners need. It runs on the 28, 36 and 48 in. cattle tanks, on the SC48 sheep trough, and on the cattle side of all four CH combination units.
The usual reasons a valve gets changed
Grit off a new line, mineral scale from well water, or a seat that has simply worn after enough seasons. If the tank overflows or dribbles constantly, the valve is the first thing to look at, then the float and the rod. All three sit together in the same insulated compartment.
