The Pride of the Farm WPM14 Polar Max is an energy free four hole drinker for swine. 14 gallons across four insulated flaps, and enough water for 200 market hogs or 100 sows. In the right conditions there is nothing to plug in, no heater to run and no electric bill.
It is the four hole answer to the WPM10. Four hogs drink at once instead of one, which is what keeps a bigger pen moving at feeding time, and the wider body carries the extra inventory to back it up. The hog flap is what makes it the swine version. For sheep and calves, order the WPM14A instead.

How an energy free drinker works
There is no heater. Heat energy comes from the ground water entering the drinker between 45 and 56 degrees. Foam insulation between the double walls, rated R-7.50 per inch, holds that heat, and patented baffles isolate the drinking water from the energy storage body under the valve cover. Every drink replenishes the heat that has been lost.
This waterer is use based
The Polar Max carries no heater, so every bit of warmth in it arrives with the water. The inventory needs to turn over about twice a day to keep that heat coming, which works out to roughly 5 to 15 animals depending on the model and whether the waterer is sheltered from the wind. The insulation holds heat, it cannot make any.
Check your numbers first. A light bunch on a waterer built for a bigger one will ice over whatever the R value says, so with low head counts go heated or add supplemental heat.
Polar Max features
- Insulated flap instead of a ball or float, so animals open it with the same rooting motion they are born with and every flap can be used at once
- Flaps sit at an angle, not flat, so ice and contamination shed off instead of building up
- Double wall construction with a seamless sidewall that cannot leak
- Foam insulation rated R-7.50 per inch with no hazardous chlorofluorocarbons
- Hindered amine light stabilizer for ultraviolet protection
- Sealed bottom keeps out moisture and rodents
- Two drain holes for a fast cleanout
- Nonsiphoning DuraPride valve, stainless steel bolts and a removable top for easy access to the plumbing
- Notched flanges for easy anchoring, anchor package model 383344 available
- Approved for Grade A installations, optional wing bolts model OF403WB for Grade A inspections
Installation
Set it level on a pad with a riser tile of at least 8 inches sealed airtight to the pad, and run the supply line up inside the tile without letting it touch. No insulated tube is needed and it fits most existing pads. The valve is molded with ABS resin, so use standard teflon tape or a plastic compatible teflon sealant only, never pipe dope or anything formulated with PTFE.

Fourteen Gallons for a Bigger Barn
Two hundred hogs or 100 sows, and still no cord to run given the right conditions. Hawkeye Steel have been building these since 1920, which is why the parts for one bought twenty years ago are still on the shelf here.

How does it work with no power
How does it work with no power
The WPM14 is energy free in the right conditions, with nothing to plug in and no electric bill. Heat energy comes from the ground water entering the drinker between 45 and 56 degrees, foam insulation between the walls holds it, and patented baffles isolate the drinking water from the energy storage body under the valve cover. It leans on enough animals drinking to keep that water turning over, so in hard cold or with light numbers plan on supplemental heat.
How many animals do I need using it?
How many animals do I need using it?
Enough animals that the water turns over about twice a day, which is roughly 5 to 15 head depending on the drinker, the size of the animals and whether it is sheltered. If the incoming water is colder than about 40 degrees, from a pond or a mountain spring, you can see icing in the openings.
What does installation take?

The valve is molded with ABS resin. Use standard teflon tape or a plastic compatible teflon sealant only. Do not use pipe thread sealant, commonly called pipe dope, and do not use anything formulated with PTFE.
How do I get new animals started on the flap?
How do I get new animals started on the flap?
Most animals open the flap without training. If some are hesitant, hold a flap open with a tarp strap for a day or two, or turn a flap over and leave it upside down for 24 to 48 hours.
How do I clean it out?

Two drain holes let you flush it out fast. Tolerance to water level means you do not have to chase summer and winter settings the way you do with a ball or flat closure that can stick.
