Description
Description
Everything you need to turn a barrel, a stock tank or a length of large PVC into a gravity fed hog waterer. The container itself is not included.
The kit is the Model 33/13 cast aluminum cup, the complete 290 gravity valve, a cradle base to steady it, the instruction sheet and a back plate template so you can mark the holes square the first time. The pig pushes the paddle and the water comes, and the knob on the 290 valve sets how much pressure it takes, so you can tune it to the size of the animals.
The cup is cast aluminum and the base holds it steady, which is what keeps a hog from working it loose over a season.
Turn a Barrel Into a Waterer
Everything you need to convert a barrel, a stock tank or a length of large PVC into a gravity fed waterer. The cup, the valve, the cradle base and the template are all here. You supply the container.
Gravity Barrel Kit or a Pressure Cup Waterer?
Both put water in front of hogs. The question is whether you have a pressurized line running to the spot.
| Barrel Waterer Kit, part 17515 | Pressure cup waterer, such as the Model 33 | |
|---|---|---|
| Water supply | Gravity from a barrel you fill. No line, no pump, no pressure. | A pressurized water line run to the waterer. |
| What you supply | The barrel, stock tank or large PVC. Everything else is in the kit. | Nothing, the waterer is complete, but the plumbing is on you. |
| Where it works | Pens and lots with no water line, rented ground, anywhere you can haul water to. | Barns and lots already plumbed. |
| Refilling | You fill the barrel. Capacity is whatever container you use. | Continuous, as long as the line holds pressure. |
| Winter use | Not suited to it. The trough is exposed and there is no provision for heat. | Depends on the model and whether the line is protected. |
| Price | $186.55, and it ships free to the 48 states | From about $82 for the cup alone |
Building Your Barrel Waterer
-
1. Pick the container
A clean barrel, a stock tank or a length of large diameter PVC. Nothing that has held chemicals or fuel. The kit does not include the container, which is the part most people already have.
-
2. Mark it with the template
Use the back plate template from the kit to mark the opening and the bolt holes. Set it low enough that the cup draws the barrel down properly, and high enough to leave the sediment behind.
-
3. Fit the cup and the valve
Bolt the Model 33/13 cast aluminum cup through the wall onto the cradle base, then fit the complete 290 gravity valve behind it. The instruction sheet in the kit walks through the order.
-
4. Fill, set the paddle, watch them drink
Fill the container and set the adjustable knob so the paddle takes about the pressure your hogs can give it. Watch the first group work it and adjust from there.
Barrel Waterer Troubleshooting
Shop 290 Valve Parts-
It will not shut off
Grit sitting on the 290 valve seat. Drain the barrel, pull the valve, rinse the seat and the strainer and refit. If the seat is worn rather than dirty, repair kit 12530A rebuilds the valve.
-
No water comes through
Check the container is vented. A sealed barrel will airlock and nothing will reach the cup however hard the paddle is pushed.
-
Flow has gone slow
The strainer on the 290 valve is probably loaded with sediment. Rinse it, and if it is past cleaning, the strainer is sold on its own.
-
The paddle is too stiff for young pigs
Back the adjustable knob off. A paddle set for finishers is more than a weaned pig can move, and that is the most common reason a new barrel waterer goes unused.

Barrel Waterer Frequently Asked Questions
What You Get
Is the barrel included?
Is the barrel included?
No. The kit is the Model 33/13 cast aluminum cup, a complete 290 gravity valve, the cradle base, the back plate template and the instruction sheet. You supply the barrel, stock tank or large PVC, which is usually the part people already have on hand.
What can I mount it to?
What can I mount it to?
Any clean container with a flat enough section of wall to take the back plate and the cradle base. A plastic or steel barrel, a stock tank or a length of large diameter PVC all work. Avoid anything that has held chemicals or fuel.
Using It
Does it need water pressure?
Does it need water pressure?
No, and that is the whole point of it. It runs on gravity from whatever you fill, so it waters stock in pens and lots that have no water line at all.
Can I use it through the winter?
Can I use it through the winter?
It is not suited to winter. The trough is exposed and there is no provision for adding heat, so it will freeze. Think of it as a three season waterer, or one for a barn that stays above freezing.
How do I set the paddle?
How do I set the paddle?
The 290 valve has an adjustable knob that sets how much pressure the paddle takes. Start soft and firm it up until the hogs can work it without it running on its own. Weaned pigs need it noticeably lighter than finishers.
Parts and Care
What wears out first?
What wears out first?
The 290 gravity valve, like on any gravity setup. Grit works onto the seat and it starts to run on. Repair kit 12530A rebuilds it, and the seats, seals, springs and strainers are all stocked separately.
How often should I clean it?
How often should I clean it?
Drain and rinse the container between groups, and rinse the valve strainer when you do. Sediment settling in the bottom of a barrel is what eventually finds its way onto the valve seat.
