Miraco BIGspring 6400

Miraco rates the 6400 for 250 head of beef cattle or 125 dairy cows. It holds 90 gallons and gives ten feet of open trough at a 22 inch drinking height, in a footprint that is still only 22 inches wide.

The BigSpring is an open trough waterer, so in a freezing climate it needs heat. We recommend Miraco heat package 162, the complete kit. It pairs the 543-5 immersion water warmer with the 919-5 cable heater, so the trough, the water line and the valve are all protected, not just the water in the trough. A 240 volt heater is also an option. Run either one on a dedicated circuit with a ground fault breaker.

Lift the float to shut off the water, then pull the bottom drain and let the trough empty. The trough clears out and scrubs down quickly. Put the drain back and release the float to refill.

Set the unit on a level pad with the water line coming up inside the base, bolt it down, hook up the supply line and set the float. Most people have it watering the same day. The footprint drawing and the instruction manual are both on this page, so you can pour the pad and stub the line in before the unit arrives.

Release the spring loaded clips and lift off the valve chamber cover. The valve and the float sit underneath it. No wrenches are needed, so a float adjustment or a valve change is a few minutes of work, and every part inside is listed on the BIGspring 6400 parts breakdown.

Tip: while the cover is off, check the gasket underneath it. If the gasket is damaged or missing, replace it.

Miraco calls for a neckrail on the 6400. Ten feet of open trough is a lot of water surface, and a rail keeps cattle out of the water, which keeps it clean and cuts down on how often you drain and scrub.
