Description
Description
The E-Fount 3465-E is the compact two hole heated waterer. 20 gallons, about 100 head of beef or 40 dairy, with a 75 watt element and thermostat built in, in a body only 36 inches long and 24 wide.
Two openings in a small footprint. The second drinking hole is what relieves crowding at water, and this is the smallest unit in the line that gives you one. That makes it the pick for a fenceline between two pens, or any spot where a 3390 or a 3354 simply will not fit.
Four kilowatts a week at 25 below. The element is 75 watts and thermostat controlled, so it only draws when the water needs it. On a smaller trough like this one the insulation carries most of the load and the element covers the coldest nights.
Insulated body, not just a heated tank. Two to three inches of urethane insulation with extra above the valve area, in Rockite high impact polyethylene that will not rust or rot.
Patented roll-away ball closures that roll clear of the animal rather than sitting in its face, then roll back over the opening when it steps away.
18 inch drinking height, removable dome for valve and element access, sloped bottom for cleaning. Five year warranty.

Sheep and goats, and where energy free works
Sheep and goats can be watered on an energy free unit, but your climate matters more here than it does with cattle, so it is worth thinking through before you order.
An energy free waterer stays open because animals keep drinking from it. Every drink pulls warmer water up from the supply line and keeps the trough turning over. Cattle do that easily because they drink a lot, and often. Sheep and goats take smaller amounts and take them less often, so less water moves through the trough.
In mild climates, that is usually enough. Producers in the Carolinas and further south run these units energy free for sheep and goats and do well with them. In harsh winter country, it is not enough. When temperatures sit below freezing for days at a time, sheep and goats will not move enough water to keep the trough open, and that is not a herd size problem. A hundred head of sheep still will not do it.
What we recommend
- Mild climate, and you are willing to watch it. Energy free works well here. If a hard cold snap moves through, plan on checking the unit through the day until the weather breaks.
- Harsh winter country, run electric to the waterer. If you are watering sheep or goats through a real winter, plan on power at the unit from the start.
- Or use a unit designed for sheep and goats, such as the LilSpring 2700 with heat. It is built around how these animals actually drink.
If the water starts to ice over, you can replicate drinking by hand. Scoop water out of the trough with a small bucket into a larger 5 gallon bucket. Taking water out is what pulls warmer water in from the supply line and replenishes the trough, which is exactly what the animals would be doing if they drank like cattle.
If you are not sure which side of the line you are on, give us a call before you order. It is an easy conversation and it saves a lot of frustration in January.
Two Things That Cause Most Service Calls
Neither one is a broken part. Both are setup, and both are quick to check before you order anything.
The ball closure should never sit tight against the top
Not in the fall, not in the dead of winter. There should be a gap between the ball and the top of the opening at all times.
Two things happen when that gap is there. Water washes off the ball as an animal lets it go, instead of pooling on top of it and freezing into a lid. And the ball moves, and movement is what keeps ice from setting up in the first place. A ball jammed tight against the top has neither, and by January you have a waterer the cattle cannot open.
If yours is sitting tight, lowering the water level by lowering the float is what to fix.
The water level goes below the anti airlock hole
These units are drilled with a small hole that prevents an air lock. You can see it in both photos below, one from inside the trough and one from outside the unit.
Inside the trough. The small hole in the wall is the anti airlock vent.
The same hole from outside the unit, next to the mounting screw.Set the water level so it sits below that hole. If the water comes up to the hole or above it, the valve may leak continuously.
A leaking valve looks like a valve or float problem, so that is usually where people start. Before you replace the valve and float system, check that the water level is set at the right height. That may solve it without an additional purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many head will the E-Fount 3465-E water?
How many head will the E-Fount 3465-E water?
Miraco rates it for 100 head beef or 40 head dairy. It holds 20 gallons and refills as animals drink.
How much electricity does the 3465-E use?
How much electricity does the 3465-E use?
The 3465-E carries a 75 watt heat element and a thermostat. Miraco states an E-Fount uses only 4 kilowatts through a week of 25 below zero weather. Run it on a dedicated circuit with a ground fault breaker, the same as any heated waterer.
How do I drain and clean the 3465-E?
How do I drain and clean the 3465-E?
Miraco builds a sloped bottom into these units, which is a MiraFount exclusive. Sediment works toward the drain instead of settling in the corners, so pulling the drain plug empties and rinses it quickly. The dome comes off for the valve and the float, so nothing inside is buried.
What does installation take?
What does installation take?
Set the unit on a level pad with the water line coming up inside the base, bolt it down, hook up the supply and set the float. The footprint drawing and the instruction manual are both on this page, so you can pour the pad and stub the line in before the unit arrives.
How do I get at the valve and float?
How do I get at the valve and float?
The dome comes off and the valve and float are right there. Nothing is buried, so a float adjustment or a valve change is a short job, and every part inside is listed on the E-Fount 3465-E parts breakdown.
What are the drinking openings like?
What are the drinking openings like?
Two 9.5 inch openings with 10 inch ball closures. Miraco roll away ball closures cover each opening. An animal pushes the ball down to drink and it rolls back into place afterward, so there is nothing in the animal's face while it drinks and the water is never left open to the cold air.

Water Level and Ball Closure
My valve keeps running and will not shut off. What do I check first?
My valve keeps running and will not shut off. What do I check first?
The water level. These units have a small anti airlock hole drilled in them, and the level has to sit below that hole. If the water comes up to the hole or above it, the valve may leak continuously. Adjust the float down until the level rests below the hole before you replace anything. There are photos of the hole further up this page, one from inside the trough and one from outside.
Where is the anti airlock hole?
Where is the anti airlock hole?
It is a small drilled hole in the wall of the unit. Look for it from inside the trough, and you can also see it from outside next to a mounting screw. It exists to stop an air lock from forming. The only thing you have to do with it is keep the water level under it.
Should the ball closure sit tight against the top?
Should the ball closure sit tight against the top?
No, and not in the dead of winter either. There should always be a gap between the ball and the top of the opening. That gap lets water wash off the ball instead of pooling on top and freezing into a lid, and it lets the ball move, which is what keeps ice from setting up. A ball jammed tight has neither.
The balls froze shut. Do I need more heat?
The balls froze shut. Do I need more heat?
Check the closure gap before you add heat. If the balls were sitting tight against the top, water pooled on them and froze, and that is a setup problem rather than a heat problem. Set the gap first, then judge whether you still need heat.
Sheep and Goats
Can I use this energy free for sheep or goats?
Can I use this energy free for sheep or goats?
It depends on your climate. An energy free waterer stays open because animals keep drinking and pulling warmer water up from the supply line. Sheep and goats drink in smaller amounts and less often than cattle, so less water moves through the trough. In mild climates, such as the Carolinas and further south, that is usually enough and these units work well. What should I use for sheep and goats in a cold winter climate?
What should I use for sheep and goats in a cold winter climate?
Plan on running electric to the waterer, or use a unit built for sheep and goats such as the LilSpring 2700 with heat. Deciding that at the start is a lot easier than trenching power out to a waterer in February.
What if a cold snap comes through and I am running energy free?
What if a cold snap comes through and I am running energy free?
Check the unit through the day until the weather breaks, so you catch the water before it starts to ice over. You can also replicate drinking by hand: scoop water out of the trough with a small bucket into a larger 5 gallon bucket. Removing water is what draws warmer water in from the supply line and refreshes the trough, which is the job the animals are not doing on their own.
