Description
Description
The Ritchie Cable Heater (#13830) is designed to protect your water line and valve from freezing in cold weather. When connected through your Ritchie thermostat, this cable heater provides 8 feet of consistent heat coverage to help maintain water flow and prevent freeze-ups.
Simply wrap the cable around your valve and water line for added winter protection, then run it down into the riser tube for extended coverage where it matters most. Built with a durable braided fiberglass exterior and sealed ends, this heater is made to withstand tough livestock environments.
TIP: Loosely attach cable heater to waterline using zip ties, then feed the cable heater down your waterline into the riser tube.
Common questions about the 13830 cable heater
I have an older metal unit with no cable heater, or the one in it looks like a coiled mesh. Will the 13830 work in it?
I have an older metal unit with no cable heater, or the one in it looks like a coiled mesh. Will the 13830 work in it?
Yes, it will. The 13830 is simply the newer style of the same part. It wires through the thermostat exactly the way the old cable heater did, so nothing else about your setup has to change.
If you would like to see how it goes together, the Ritchie heater wiring diagram without a junction box shows the connections.
My unit already has a heater in it. Do I really need the cable heater too?
My unit already has a heater in it. Do I really need the cable heater too?
Yes, and it is worth understanding why, because the two do different jobs. The 14150 and the 11419 style heaters warm the trough. The 13830 cable heater protects the valve and the waterline, which is where most freeze ups actually begin.
It is thermostatically controlled, so it comes on at the same moment your thermostat triggers the other heater, and it draws very little wattage. It is inexpensive protection for the part of the system you cannot see.
Does this cable heater go in the plastic units?
Does this cable heater go in the plastic units?
No, it does not. The 13830 is thermostatically controlled and has to run through a separate thermostat, and the plastic units do not have one.
It is made for the older all metal Ritchie waterers, and for units with a metal trough such as the OmniFount, the EcoFount and the CattleMaster series.
