Warranty

Ritchie warrants its waterers against manufacturing defect for ten years, with coverage depending on how the unit is built.

Poly units: the base, top and ball closures carry a ten year limited warranty, covered at 100 percent for the first five years, then declining 20 percent per year through the remaining five years.

Stainless steel units: the stainless trough and stainless valve chamber frame carry a ten year limited warranty, plus ten years of corrosion coverage, at 100 percent for the entire ten year period.

Parts, such as floats, valves and heating elements, are warranted for one year from the date of purchase, at 100 percent against manufacturing defect.

Description

The Classic Equine by Ritchie UltraFount 2 is the one you buy when the barn has to keep watering through January. It pairs a stainless steel trough with an insulated polyethylene casing and thermostatically controlled heat, and it waters up to 40 horses.

The heat is not an afterthought. Two heaters mount to the underside of the trough and a 48 watt cable heater protects the supply line, 298W total (2.5A@120V), so the trough stays drinkable rather than skimming over on a cold night. Because the disc thermostat only calls for heat as the water drops toward 45 degrees, the unit is not running up the meter in October.

The stainless steel trough is the other reason barns choose the UltraFount over the AutoFount. Stainless does not scratch and hold algae the way poly does, it rinses clean, and it stands up to a horse that leans on things. The access panel opens to the valve, float and heating parts, so a repair does not mean pulling the unit off the wall, and the drain plug and drain pipe empty the trough for regular cleaning.

The polyethylene carries a 10 year warranty.

Ruth was amazing! She got my waterers in two days! Such a relief after being jerked around by others and the manufacturer for weeks. They arrived in perfect condition. The installation was easy. Only one has a leak at the valve which I know how to fix (when its not 20 degrees outside and I don't mind my hands getting wet.) You will definitely want a better tool than the allen wrench to install the lid hinge bolts. I did the first one with their tool and it took 20 minutes. The remaining units I used a ratchet screw driver with a star bit and it took less than a minute. They survived easily their first night unprotected at 22 degrees. Nearby troughs all froze. The only con I see is the standpipe install is dependent on getting the o-ring exactly right, otherwise it leaks. It took me multiple tries on each unit to get it watertight.
